1) Set a goal
The first step to push yourself to the next level is to set reasonable goals. Goals have a funny way of changing you.
Goals drive us to work harder, and they constantly push us out of our comfort zones. But the problem with goals is that they get in the way of your natural desires.
So when setting your goal, make sure you clearly identify what you want and then forget about it.
For example, if your goal is to learn how to work with wood, getting a job as a carpenter may be great for your bank account, but it will not help you achieve the genuine desire to learn how to work with wood.
However, if you love working with wood and want to do so whenever and wherever you like (part-time), maybe a budding side business in furniture building would be a better option since it will allow you that flexibility without dealing with all the stress of being an employee.
So when setting your goal or planning out what actions you need to take to accomplish it, make sure it aligns with what you want.
2) Be consistent in your efforts, no matter how small they may seem
Being consistent in your efforts is essential to breaking through any plateaus you face. Unfortunately, many people think that the only solution is to put more time and effort into it when they are in a funk or not seeing results.
While this can be true, there is a fine line between putting in too much effort and doing just enough over the long haul.
Learning how to strike a balance of time and effort (which is different for everyone) can take some trial and error, but once you get it down, the feeling of ease that comes with it is priceless.
3) Reflect on what you’ve accomplished and learned from your mistakes
When you focus too much on your mistakes, it can discourage you, and you might see yourself as a failure instead of the person who can overcome any obstacle.
But when you reflect on everything that’s happened in your lives so far, especially your past experiences with making mistakes, this knowledge becomes an asset to help push yourself through the tough times.
Consider looking back at all the things you have tried or are trying to do right now. If it hasn’t worked out yet, ask yourself why it didn’t work and how you could make sure that same mistake never happens again.
Then keep in mind that it is totally fine to make mistakes. After all, what are mistakes other than opportunities for us to become better versions of ourselves?
4) Push yourself to the limit of what is comfortable for you
You can’t grow if you don’t challenge yourself to reach your full potential. So while it’s great to push yourself out of your comfort zone, try not to forget about the importance of still staying active in what’s comfortable.
If there are no challenges, you will never risk failure, but without any failure (or close misses), there is no growth. To continue growing and improving, we need both, so make sure that you incorporate both into your life every week.
5) Celebrate every success as if it were the first time!
Our brains tend to get stuck in patterns, and before you know it, the brain is running on autopilot. While this can be a good thing at times, more often than not, our autopilot brains only let us stay in our comfort zone while rarely pushing us out of it (or never even trying).
If you want to succeed, then you need to see and feel how great it feels. If you don’t push yourself, even the smallest goals will be challenging to reach.
So next time you achieve a goal or something great happens in your life, take some time out to truly appreciate it; this is because if we can consistently do this each week, then all of these fantastic things will stack up and amount to something; truly spectacular!
6) Stop being so hard on yourself when trying to improve
It’s easy to beat yourself up over small mistakes (or even big ones!).
However, being too judgmental on our actions can lead us down a very dark path where it becomes tough for us to feel good about what we are doing and who we are becoming as individuals.
Even worse, by focusing too much on our mistakes rather than the big picture, we will most likely repeat what we don’t want to do moving forward.
Don’t beat yourself up over small mistakes but also try not to forget about them either. Instead, use these as opportunities for you to reflect and learn from your past actions so you can adjust your future behavior accordingly. After all, personal growth is about consistently improving!
7) Understand that failure is a necessary part of the success
There is no other way around it; if you are going to push yourself out of your comfort zone, you will risk stumbling along the way (and quite possibly falling down).
But as I mentioned in point number three, instead of being afraid that it may happen, let it happen.
After all, the more often we take risks and get knocked down, the more opportunities we can learn from our mistakes.
8) Kill your Ego!
Having a big ego is not just an indication of confidence; it’s also one reason why many people never improve themselves.
For example, consider this scenario: An aspiring entrepreneur has been trying hard for the past six months to build up his online business but hasn’t seen any significant success as he was hoping for.
As a result, he becomes discouraged and believes that things will never get better because he’s not good enough.
As a result, he soon begins limiting himself from experimenting with new ideas or approaches that could be very beneficial.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being confident in your abilities. Still, if you are too proud, you may find yourself ignoring anything that goes against your current beliefs about who you are (and what is possible), which could lead to missed opportunities in life!
So always remember that humility will help you stay open-minded and make it much easier to keep your options open without limiting yourself.
9) Experiment with different new habits and don’t give up if they fail the first time!
Changing a habit is no easy task but while most people would put it off until later, why not take some time out this week to try something new?
Whether that means reading a book you’ve been wanting to read, walking more steps each day.
Feel free to start multiple new ideas as there is nothing wrong with trying them all at once.
Remember that many great inventions took years of work and testing before being perfect (or even close!), so be patient with yourself and know that it’s ok to experiment.
10) Host a weekly event to keep you accountable and proactive!
Let’s face it; if you are trying to change your life, you need all the help you can get, so why not do something special for yourself each week?
Whether going out with friends or treating yourself to a fun weekend trip, make sure that every week has an awesome activity lined up, complete with lots of positive energy and exciting plans.
As long as there is an incentive to be great, getting motivated won’t be hard at all!
